Paving your way
Step by Step
Step 2 Preparation
Measure and stake the area to be paved making it approximately 12" larger than the area required. Remember to slope the paving away from the buildings to allow for proper drainage. Make sure that you have a square corner at your starting point.
Step 3 Excavating
Excavate the soil to a depth of 7”-9” and add 4"-6" processed gravel or a base material. Where there will be vehicular traffic or surrounding a pool install a base of 6”-8”.You will need to adjust the excavation to a depth of 9”-11” deep.
Step 4 Installing the Base
Compact the surface of the excavated soil use a plate compactor (you can rent these). In small areas a hand tamper may be sufficient. Fill the area with 3/4” processed gravel compacting it until it is approximately 3" to 3 1/2 " thick. Make sure to slope the surface1/8” per foot for drainage. To achieve the slope Install a level line across the area . On the end you want to slope towards, move the line down 1/8” for every foot of pavement.
Step 5 Edge Restraints
Edge restraints should always be installed to prevent the pavers from moving. You can use plastic edge, aluminum, concrete or pressure-treated wood.
Step 6 Screening the Bedding Sand
Before you install the pavers, a bed of sand needs to be installed. Use 1” outside diameter conduit or pipe, and place them 5’ to 8’ apart along the area to be paved. Adjust the height of the rails by putting sand under them or removing some of the the base so the rails are even. place sand on the outside of the rails to hold them in place. Fill the area between the rails with sand slightly higher than the top of each conduit or pipe. Use a 2” x 4” board to drag across the top to smooth and level the surface. Fill in any low spots and repeat the process. Remove the rails and fill in the indentations with sand, and trowel smooth. Do not walk on, compact or wet the sand after you have finished screening.
Step 7 Installing Pavers
Starting in a corner, install the pavers. Work outwards keeping all joint lines straight. You an use a string line along the paver edges to keep them straight. The pavers along the string should touch the line. After enough pavers are installed you can work on top of the pavers already installed. Make sure to stay away from the edges so you do not disturb the sand bed. Cut pavers to fit along the edge restraints.
Step 8 Cutting Pavers
Measure and mark the pavers to be cut with a marking crayon or wide pencil. For the best look a diamond blade wet saw will have a nicer edge than a paver splitter or a hammer and chisel. Make sure to always wear safety glasses.
Step 9 Compacting & Setting & Finishing
Sweep the surface and remove any debris. Spread masonry sand over the surface of the pavers and sweep it into the joints leaving an excess sand. Tamp the pavers using the plate compactor. The excess sand will cushion the surface and the vibration will assist in filling the joints. Spread more sand if required. Make several passes with the compactor. Sweep off the remaining sand.

From a corner stake measure 3’ across the base and 4’ up the side. The diagonal line joining these two points should be 5’. If it is not, adjust the 4’ side until the diagonal is exactly 5’.
