It looks particularly stunning with yellow-flowered plants such as Mecardonia and Scoparia, and in containers is a great companion to Sedum, Petunia, and Torenia, among many others. | DescriptionQuick-growing, very unusual and handsome, and refusing to fade or wilt even in punishing summer temperatures. The foliage is very large, heart-shaped, and nicely curled, with standout veining and good symmetry. It is dark eggplant-purple that looks black in the shade. The leaves appear in pairs, each new set above the previous one, and is studded with tiny white and purple blooms in spring. Reaching just 10 to 15 inches high, spreading at least 2 feet. This makes it a great container subject, of course, but it's also a fine garden presence, hiding the bare stems of flowering annuals and frothing along the edges of paths, the front of the annual bed, or along the driveway. Versatile and so easy, it thrives in sun to part shade, looking fresh and new from spring until hard frost! Perennial in zones 8-11, it is grown as an annual everywhere else." |
